Why is it written "May contain traces of peanuts or other kinds of Nuts" on peanut butter jars? Are people that stupid to realize it on their own?

it's a legal thing. if some one had never heard of peanut butter, they might not know it contains nuts. stupid, but they could sue for it.

The lawyers got to them. Don't forget, people have sued because they set a cup of hot coffee between their legs and burned themselves. After all--McDonald's didn't tell them coffee would be hot now, did they? And there is one legitimate reason, maybe--peanuts aren't nuts--they're legumes, so by putting on "and other kinds of nuts," they may be protecting themselves against lawsuits by people who are allergic to real nuts.
