English learners need LOTS of hands-on and repitition, so try having a focus for the lesson such as "fruits." Bring in several real fruits and name them, have them name them; show the word on flashcards, have them write them on flashcards; find pictures of fruits in magazines or coloring books, etc. and name them again. Make-up a BINGO game using the fruits again. Taste the fruits and talk about them Read a book that mentions fruits. Place the various fruits around the room and have each person choose a card having a fruit name written on it; they find the fruit in the room and announce it for everyone to hear. Each person could share a sentence telling which fruit is their favorite...you'll need to model for them- "I like apples."

Another great activity to do is to use old calendar pictures or pictures from magazines that are interesting. Paste the picture on a large sheet of chart paper. Point at an object in the picture and say its name aloud and draw a line from it outward to an area on the paper where you write the word. As you write each letter, say them aloud and ask students to repeat after you. Once done, repeat the name of the object. Continue by labeling several other objects and review items already labeled. Post the chart paper in the classroom and review past charts every day by having students repeat the names of the objects labeled.
