This is killing me.. Personally I think it should hurt his ERA and be considered an earned run because it was his 'error' and not anyone elses. But the fact its considered an error at all i guess makes it an unearned run.

I agree that it should count since it was the pitcher's error, but that's not the case. Rule 10.18 e) says:

"An error by a pitcher is treated exactly the same as an error by any other fielder in computing earned runs."

I still don't agree with it, but I think the whole "unearned runs" decision is often murky, and they make some questionable decisions.

An error on the pitcher is considered to be the same as an error on any other player. So therefore if the error by the pitcher leads to any unearened runs(either the error allowed the batter to get on base and the batter later scores, or if the error prevented an out which would have ended the inning prior to the runs being scored), the runs are unearned for that pitcher.

Though the pitcher himself made the error, it is not an earned run and does not count against his ERA. An error is an error, and that is the determining factor in whether or not a run is "earned".

Since ERA is used as a judge for a pitcher's pitching skills and not his fielding or "throwing to bases" skills, an error by the pitcher should not count against his ERA.
