They don't necessarily. Hollywood film-makers
seem to have some sort of fixation on mad
scientists, as do some of the other media, but this
has little relation to reality. In any large group of
people a certain small percentage will be or
become insane, but my impression is that this is
less likely to happen to a scientist than to other
people.

Several reasons:
1. Because we have to listen to SO much mis-informed, misunderstood, unscientific gibberish from idiots in the media.
2. Because the media scews up almost everything we actually say, by trying to simplify things...thus missing the point, or worse, turning it into misunderstood unscientific gibberish.
3. Because it's fun, and because I want to rule the world!

When my f***ing PCR doesn't work for the third time and then i find out from my sequence file that i'm priming against the wrong promoter...and THEN the primer database crashes because IT sucks...

because people get scared and start throwing labels around. the media doesn't help much either
