This is your old friend, then you probably know what her hobbies are.
Give her something to do with a hobby she does now or wants to start doing now that she has more time.
Give her coupons to go to dinner with you once a month for a year.
If she's a great cook, give her a gourmet food basket.
If she is a gardener, give her a beautiful rose bush to commemorate her retirement.
If she has lots of kids, give her a scrap-booking kit.
Give her a rocking chair for her back porch.
Quilting classes, flying lessons, dance lessons, tai chi class.
I presented my husband a "kit" at his retirement from the Navy. It had a membership to AARP to fill out, tips for his imaginary cane, reading glasses, a shawl, slippers, and a tape of Lawrence Welk music, hemorrhoid medicine, and nose-hair clippers, and more. It was all in a big lumpy shopping bag, and he just kept digging stuff out of it. It was hilarious.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. A cruise would be spectacular. Or how about a "Coupon" for a Champagne picnic with you? You supply all the food and dinnerware, then give her the beautiful picnic basket for a take-home gift. She has the memory of the picnic and a basket in case she wants to do it again with you or someone else. Or a set of paints and a canvas. She will need a hobby now. Good luck on your search.

Your friend has worked a lifetime, and therefore deserves a gift commemorating that. Try getting her some wine, but have all of the bottles personalized with things like "Happy retirement" or "retired for one month- let's drink." Make sure you get at least six bottles so that you have at least six occasions to celebrate with her.

I have taken part in numerous retirement presentations and I can confess now that I always got the 'right' present for the person who was leaving. I always asked them privately what they would like on the understanding that he/she showed delight and surprise at the presentation. There is nothing so stupid or ridiculous as buying presents that someone does not want or appreciate..................
