All the congress has to do, is pass an amendment or law that lines up with the constitution. As long as they have a majority, all they have to do is send it to the president to sign. Most of the supreme court is now a mojority appointed by republican presidents.

Because they can't. There are still enough sane people around to assure the protection of our rights. I hope we never have to go back to the 'back alley' abortions that ruined so many lives.

I think you need to do a little more studying. A) The Supreme Court has ruled abortion Constitution, therefore congress cannot ban it with out a Constitutional amendment. B) A Constitutional amendment requires a 2/3 (or 3/4, can't remember just now) majority just to pass the first stage - it also has to be ratified by 3/4 of the state legislators. 3) Congress has been doing the best it can against abortion in light of the things already mentioned. The anti-partial birth abortion bill is a good example of this.

Because although the 'Republicans' control both houses, there are enough liberals elected under the Republican party from very liberal states that they won't support the conservative platform. You know who they are. Look at any conservative issue that comes up for a vote; they are the ones voting with the democrats.
By the way, I don't think they said they would 'abolish' abortion. They just want to make it illegal, thereby reducing the number of abortions dramatically. You know that there will still be some abortions, that's what your shrill liberal mouthpieces are always screaming: 'You're just going to FORCE women who are the victims of rape or incest to get their abortions in an alley using a dirty coathanger.' As if the 40 million abortions conducted since roe v wade were ALL the result of incest and rape.

conservatives in congress are pretty much screwed. How can you 'abolish' abortion when the other branch of the govn't (Judicial) has now said that they 'found it in the USA Constitution' that a women has a 'constitutional right' to an abortion, - just like free speech and the right to carry arms?? (first and 2nd amendements).
For the conservatives to win on this, the Supreme court has to 'change' it's 'activist' attitude and stop morphing the document. Then after the Supremes change, they'd have to vote on it again, - which rarely happens when overturning a previous decision.
BTW: the heavy handed federal govn't should have left it up to the states to legislate health care in this manner.
... or otherwise stated...
The U.S. Constitution defines the power (specifically) delegated to the federal government. Otherwise, power is reserved to the states or retained by the people.

it can't just be illegalized. It's a Constitutional issue. In Roe v. Wade, it was decided that illegalizing abortion would violate several amendments in the Bill of Rights, so it is therefore out of Congress' hands. You might see the tide turn with the new Supreme Court, with Roberts and Alito in there. But until the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, there's nothing your precious bible-thumping southern gents in Congress can do to overturn an individual's right to control their own reproduction.

Did you forget about American rights? The constitution?
Besides, look at it this way. If you were raped, and got pregnant from that rape, would you want to carry that child and give birth to that child just to have him/her remind you of the rape everyday of your life?
If you accidentally got pregnant and KNEW you would die if you carried and had the baby, would you want to die and leave everyone else, like your husband and other children alone?
Also, what about all the unwanted kids in the world already? If they made abortion illegal, then there would be even more unwanted kids. With that, crime would most certainly rise, cause these kids aren't being taken care of or guided.
I don't agree with abortion, but I do agree with the fact that people should be able to make their own choices. A lot of pregnancies are accidents, like the one's where they were using birth control. Maybe she forgot to take one pill. Or maybe the condom broke. Accidents do happen, unfortunately.
Women should have the choice to carry a pregnancy or not.

That is only something that they say at election time. When they get to congress they have more important things to do like lower the tax rate of the richest americans. You can't expect them to worry about anything like abortion can you with that other stuff that needs to be done. I would continue to support Repugicans if I was you. They are so moral and christian.

Because the Supreme Court declared, in Roe v. Wade, that privacy is a constitutional right, and that that right extends to abortion (during a limited time frame). Even if they had the votes to do it, it's still unconstitutional.

Are you male or female? Do you want the government to take away the right to a vasectomy if you are male? I am a women and a mother of 4 and I personally don't believe in abortion but I don't want someone tell me that I can't do it if I choose. I know that sounds hypocritical, but I would never have an abortion and neither will my girls, but I don't want a person to take away my right to do that if I want too.

It requires a constitutional amendment and the right wing isn't that strong. The backlash would also knock republicans out of office for 50 years.
