How could Benicio del Toro win an Oscar in movie "Traffic"?

Question

You will think I am a "nut" but when you are playing a Mexican undercover police officer....should you not have a Mexican accent?..was I the only one that noticed that he used a Puerto Rican accent (he is Puerto Rican) to speak Spanish.....did I miss his introduction as a Puerto Rican in the movie?.....will he use the same accent to play Che Guevara?.....am I making too big a deal?....if I played an English butler and used a Mexican accent.....do you think I might win the Oscar as well???

Interesting point. I dont know whether Del Toro really deserved an oscar, but you make me wonder about some of the people who have been absolutely amazing and not won an oscar - The magnificent late River Phoenix, director Martin Scorsese, and even Leonardo Dicaprio whose performances have been better with each film (I dont think young or old should be a discriminatory factor for awards).

Not exactly sure if there is politics involved but yes sometimes people who think dont deserve do get the award.

Where does it state that a Mexican police officer cannot speak with an other-than-Mexican accent? I'll betcha there are some real Mexican police who speak Spanish with accents from Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica or any one of a dozen countries in Latin America. I believe you're making a mountain out of a molehill, friend. Conversely, do you think we don't have English-speaking foreign-born police officers here in the good ol' US of A? Is their credibility doubted? Don't think so. Benicio del Toro is a superb character actor who manages to deliver credibility to his roles.

Can't believe I wrote so much about this tempest in a teapot.
