How do you clean rusted items?

I have 10 Vintage Drive-In Theatre Speakers, and they have some rust on them. I was just curious to see how I would be able to clean them without ruining the power cords?

just a few things eg ;
coca-cola
steel whool
sos pads
very light sand paper
