Please include price as well as monthly service fees for internet. Also, consider that my main objective is to be able to travel with laptop and check e-mail and occasionally surf. Primary use, however, is to write. Would a "notebook" be a better option? Thanks.

I can tell you have researched this quite a bit. That's what i like to see. Makes me more motivated/involved in your issue. In your case you are gona want a Laptop if you are looking to travel. Pretty much ALL modern laptops have a WiFi NIC all ready built in. So at home you are gona be spending from $20-35/mo on Internet which should come with wireless functionality. Another thing that's GREAT is that EVERY thing has a WiFi connection. I was in a Burger king that had one the other day. So when you are on the road you will have a constant connection to the Internet (shouldn't be an issue). You are gonna have to be sure to use a firewall though. I have a few free ones that i could help you out with if you need, seeing that you are from my home town in Colorado

dont go for a big display as it goes increases weight and decreases battery life check for a heavy ram and hd presence which gives speed and storage option also check out centrino option as it combines processor wireless and graphics in one and redusing use of battery and giving out less heat consider to invest for something having a dvd writer and not just dvd/cdrw combo option as it will go long way with you and try it for at least an hour before buying keeping it on your lap which will give you an idea of how heat it produces and wether or not your comfortable with the ergonomics of the device
