What is the countryside like around Austin, TX?

What is the surrounding landscape like? Hills? Flat? Trees and rivers? Desert? And what outdoor activities exist?

Depends in which direction you head!
There is no true desert near Austin.
There are many riparian areas with nice trees & the occasional hidden fern grotto. A lot of river & lake activities available.
The Hill Country of Texas is just west of Austin & can be quite beautiful.
One of the largest urban bat colonies lives under the Congress St. Bridge. - intersting to watch on nice summer evenings.

Hills, lots of trees. On the edge of the Texas Hill Country, receiving close to 30 inches of precipitation a year (almost all of it rain; snow is very rare). The Colorado River (different river than the one in CA) is dammed, creating Lake Travis and Town Lake. Outdoor activities include cycling, jogging, and water sports.

North, East, and South of Austin, you have gently rolling hills, farmland, trees, and cattle. West of Austin you have the Hill Country which can be pretty rugged. We average 28 inches of rain every year. There is every kind of outdoor activity you can imagine except snow skiing.
