It may vary by state, but I think in most states it is 12 and their may be certain guidelines, and they should also be trained in infant/child CPR/First Aid.

To legally babysit, the kid has to be 12, but if you're a responsible parent.. you'd know that a 12 year old is no more capable of being responsible for your children than an 8 year old.. stick with MY chosed minimum of 15..

There is no law that says what age you must be before you can babysit. The children's parents decide the age they want their babysitter to be. It is their job to hire someone who can look after their children properly. The parents think about

your age and maturity
your experience as a babysitter
the age and number of their children
how long you will be babysitting (a few hours, one evening, overnight)
whether you can handle any special needs of the children
You may have your own guidelines about babysitting. For instance, you may decide not to babysit more than two children at a time or children under a certain age.

If you are under 16 years old ...

it is against the law for you to babysit during school hours

I have always been told that it is 12.

That is LEGALLY, meaning that if a cop was to stop by the house OR another grown up, they can not get your parents in trouble by "leaving you home alone with another child or by themselves." So, 12 is the legal age, but it is up to the parents and the children, as to what they are most comfortable with.

In NY, there is no minimum age, acording to the Child Protective Services. The minimum age to take the babysitter's course with the Red Cross is 12, however.

well, I don't know about legally, but it depends on how mature the child is. 12 or 13 is probably good. take to your local law enforcement.
