I have a very laid back job, I have my own office, and my monitor is facing me, ad there is a window behind me, I pull down the shades so that the reflection does not give it away.
Also when I here the Manager coming down the hall (foot steps are incomparable to any one elses) i just open up an excel sheet, or a database, or my work email for that matter and stop what i was doing.
But we all have things that we do on our own, I guess its not appropriate to check or bank statements or personal email, but we all do it, so Its no biggy.

My boss is a lawyer, so she's so preoccupied with everything else that I don't think she pays attention half of the time. But just to be on the safe side, when I here her get up from her chair, the computer screen shuts off.

Most corporations don't have time to walk around to try to catch someone playing on the computer. They monitor that remotely by checking your cache to see what sites you are checking out on their time.
Most have strict policies regarding personal computer usage. They don't want downloads or emails that may infect the companies info., and cause a security breach w/a hacker or virus.
You are better off waiting until you get home unless you want to just stay home permanently, and play on the computer.

My work station is away from everyone elses. My desk is located closer to the front of the building while everyone elses is located in the back, which is about a 3 minute walk to get to where I am at.

even though I have my own office I try to to log on during my breaks and when I've done all of my work but every now and then, like yesterday, if the boss is in a meeting or in his office with the door closed I'll log on .

I have developed an astounding sense of hearing. I can hear people coming down the corridor towards my office and can identify whether it is my boss or not by the sound of the footsteps,

I sit with my back against the wall and no one can see my screen... when someone's coming... ALT TAB to a very complicated looking spreadsheet....
on Yahoo attachments... they used to have a button that said "Boss is coming" when you clicked it, it went into a spreadsheet, now that was very cool.
