Even if it seems a bit dated now, I'm glad you asked this question, Moon. I think England played far too conservatively for much of the time and that ultimately cost them any chance of winning the Cup. But overall, yes, they did us proud with another strong effort at the World Cup. In their final match against cheating Portugal, they played as well as any team could have while shorthanded (after Rooney was wrongly sent off with a red card) but it was just too much to overcome. How on earth FIFA allowed a biased, unethical Argentinian referee to officiate such a critical match is beyond me. This was the same ref, btw, who sent Beckham packing in England's final match at the 1998 World Cup. So there was very definitely some history at play, doubtless including memories of Argentina's abject defeat in the Falkland Islands War. Pitiful.

Anyway, fear not, my friend. The overly conservative and unimaginative manager, Eriksson, is now out of the frame and we've plenty of talented young players in the pipeline. Notwithstanding the hateful (and wishful) thinking of their embarrassingly envious, anglophobic detractors, the Three Lions shall rise again! And in 2010, the World Cup trophy will come home to England!

ENGLAND FOREVER!!!

I don't agree with 'the wrong team won'. After Brazil, England was the greatest disappointment of the World Cup. With very talented players in every position and on the bench, England would have done much better. They struggled on every single match.

Erickson lost the plot after Owen's injury. The rest of the matches he played 4-5-1 when he had showed us how good the team was playing with 2 strikers and most of the scoring responsibility feel on Lampard and Gerard who were not having a good tournament either.

And what is it with the English not being able to hold their temper during a world cup? There is always one getting a red card in decisive matches!

The English team looked tired, old and disconnected. I hope Euro2008 will help washing out the sour taste this World Cup left us fans.

England didn't play very well thoroughout the tournament, it was disappointing. But the match against Portugal, England actually did play well and lost in a heartbreaking penalty shootout, which is even more disappointing. Hopefully now that we will have a new manager, the coming years will be much better. The tide will turn eventually, and the Lions will see victory.

England deserved to go further than they did... considering they were better than the portugeese sqaud that they lost to. Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, John Terry, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Owen (who was injured), Gerrard, Joe and Ashley Cole, Gary Neville... these are all top notch players....they certainly didn't get as far as they should of or as expected. Of course most of us bet on Brazil and Argentina, but i think that England was up there and one of the top favorites to win the whole thing. They weren't motivated by the coach, they didn't seem to want it or play with the urgency they should have.

England decieve themselves and their fans time and again. They are not good enough to be world Champions and until they realise that fact they never will be. Thinking that you can do something when you haven't the ability makes you complacent; realising that you may not be the best makes you try harder. England could have beaten Portugal but they are not as good as the French or Italians. Did they do us proud? If by that you mean did they try their hardest and they were unlucky that they didn't win the world cup; I would say that they were not unlucky and they were not good enough to win the World Cup.

The wrong team did win because it should have been France not Italy.

No, England did not do us proud. Once again they underacheived. In my opinion most of the blame must go to Sven. But some of the players could have tried a little harder.
