Yes. hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is the hormone secreted by the fertilized egg during pregnancy that is detected in urine with a pregnancy test. In the beginning stages of pregnancy hCG can have low levels in your body and a pregnancy test may not be able to detect it but as you go further into your pregnancy your levels of hCG will raise a little. That is why to ensure you don't get a false negative wait until a few days after your period is due to test.

In home pregnancy (urine) tests, yes. A friend of mine didn't get a positive result until she was several months into her pregnancy (she had gone to her dr. to be tested and knew she was pregnant but just wanted to see when a HPT would turn positive). If it's been at least two weeks since ovulation/possible conception and you're still getting a negative result and haven't gotten your period yet, get a blood pregnancy test through your dr. if you can. Those are much more accurate as long as it's been 8-10 days from possible conception.

When you have sex and create a baby there is a hormone your body produces. That hormone is what the pregnancy test is looking for when you take it.
