offer "sound" advice. tell them what they want to hear.
"does this dress look good on me?"
"yes it does, how about adding this little bag or accessoriy to it? I think that looks great.."
since it is an expensive store, you'll need to be honest, yet salesy. make nice and be their fashion consultant. tell them if it does look bad then point out something that would look good on them and state why. say stuff like it suits your look or that color looks great on you etc etc. getting to know the customer can yield you a great well of knowledge about them and their tastes. the more you know about them the more you can guide them to better choices or whatever. if you simply stand there and just fetch clothes for them you're not really doing anything for you or them. talk to them ask what they're looking to get what, they're in the market for etc. than point them out to what you got and go from there.

Well, it brings up a couple of questions ... Are there sales quotas and are you reaching them even while "giving" some of the sales to the other girls? If so, you should maybe just let your manager know that you don't think this is a problem. If your company allows people to "split" sales, maybe you should try that approach. Otherwise, if it is perceived as a problem by your manager, you need to accept the promotion, so you can talk with all the girls from a position of authority. While you might not mind, you probably aren't the only one "accidentally" losing sales. It might really bother some of the other girls. Then, bring it up like "I've noticed this happening to someone else - how can we solve this before it is a problem" and discuss options with the other girls. Good luck!!!

i think that you should say what comes natural to you. maybe you should suggest clothing that will nice on them. observe the other girls and maybe you can get some ideas from them. you must be doing some things right because otherwise your manager would not want to promote you. are your customers regulars? if so get to know them, ask about their families, what kinds of fabrics they like, the weather, etc. after a while it might come natural to you, and don't let the other girls take your sales...

Don't leave her side unless it is to get something for the customer! If one of the other sales girls do come up and try to interrupt, politely say "Excuse me, I found what you were looking for" or "Excuse me, Did you decide on the dress yet? I'd be happy to ring it up for you?" If that doesn't let the other sales girl know that the customer is yours, you may need to pull her aside and politely let her know!

Genuine flattery. Find something in your client that is nice, and say so. Keep it real though. People can spot false flattery a mile away.
Ask her about herself, in a general, not too personal way. If the customer mentions anything about herself, ask her a question. If she mentions a child, ask how old the child it. etc.
It's true...I learned a long time ago that if you are going to move up, you can be nice to people (co-workers) but in a distant, general way so they don't take advantage of you.

I think the best thing to do without being the annoying retail rep is to give them your opinion on whatever they are trying on. I think flattery always makes a person feel good (as long as it seems somewhat sincere) and will make them more likely to buy the item.
I wouldnt suggest standing by their side all the time, that gets annoying, but you should stand in their vicinity. Hopefully, that will give other girls the hint that you are helping them.

I don't like overly pushy sales people, I like when they come and say, "Hello my name is __________ please let me know if you need any help with anything." Then check up on them periodicially and ask if they need any additional assistance. The people at the cash register should always ask if anyone was helping them too, to keep from "stealing" other employee's sales.

You sound like a nice person, unfortunately most really successful people are not nice people, you have to find a compromise -- it's not usually possible to stay mates with people who work under your direction.
