Believe it or not, Windex kills ants. After killing the visible ants in the house, spray a light mist around the area that they are coming in. You just have to remember to refresh the area after shampooing or washing. It really does work.

We get them every year. We treat the outside perimeter and underneath our house with ant killer called Tero, I think, and use Ortho Max spray on the inside. Like others have said, you have to follow the trail and get them where they're coming in. Spray every nook and crack that you think an ants will squeeze into. For us, after a few days the ants were gone.

Don't leave any food sitting around. Then treat the perimeter of each room and the perimeter of the house with an ant spray. Especially treat the areas where you have seen their trails. I had troubles with them when I lived in Houston. After I did that, I never had troubles with them again.
