YES!!! I remember thinking this too. There would be no need for the other two films if Gondalf had just summoned those eagles. Frodo wouldn't have lost a finger and would have been back safe at the Shire months earlier.

"As servants of Manwë, they represent an aspect of the divine in the story, and as it is, their use already provokes cries of deus ex machina!! But secondly, and more importantly (because it's more concrete to the plot), what do you think would have happened if nine huge Eagles, bearing the Ring, had swept into the sky and simply flown to Mordor? Who would have been there to meet them? I can tell you: winged Nazgûl. The Company got by because the Nazgûl, having been unhorsed and de-shaped, didn't know where they were and could not find them quickly enough. People creeping along on the land are far less noticeable than people flying through the sky on gigantic birds. Instead of slipping through the defenses, they would have been met with everything Sauron had to throw at them, and to my way of thinking, could actually have been defeated in plain battle. A huge distraction at his front gate, on the other hand, while two tiny figures crawled over the back fence, is a believable, if more troublesome and wearying, way to go. "

Keep in mind that Mt. Doom was heavily guarded. Even if the eagles could somehow get past the Nazgul, they'd still have a tipped off and quite formidable Sauron to contend with. Thus, the method employed by the hobbits i.e secretive, low profile and ballsy, was the ideal and indeed only way to destroy the ring, tactically speaking I guess. Remember in Star Wars how the rebels blew up the Death Star? Small scale surprise attack to get past huge defenses? Same concept.

The eagles weren't at Gandalf's "command". They were just friends of his from when they rescued him and Bilbo in "The Hobbit". Anyway, the ring's power grew as they got closer to Mordor. The Nazgul and Ring Wraiths would have been waiting for him and easily gotten the ring.

The Ring would have corrupted Gandalf before they got there. The Ring's power grew as the approached Mount Doom.

Then there would not have been an entertaining film or book for that matter. This is how I watch movies without asking those silly questions, otherwise I wouldn't be able to enjoy any movie. As you know Frodo and Sam learned some valuable lessons about friendship, and if it could have been done that easily they wouldn't have learned a thing from it.

There would have been the risk of the ring not actually landing in the fire because the eagles couldn't fly that close to it; then Sauron would probably have found it and Middle Earth would have changed forever.

Gandalf did have eagles willing to help him, however, Sauron had his Wraiths. There's no way the eagles would have made it past them and into the interior of Mordor.

The action picture made Frodo fairly vulnerable and whiny. He became unlike that interior the books. each occasion of Frodo's potential shining via became ripped from him and given to a distinctive character. The clearest occasion of this is on the Flight to the Ford. Frodo rode on my own wounded to the factor to death to the Fords of Bruinen. After crossing the river he stood on my own against all 9 Nazgul and defied them to the tip. He cursed them and informed them to pass back to the shadow. He drew his sword and stood his floor however he ought to truly stand "pass back to the shadow! You shall have neither the hoop, nor me!" interior the e book, it became fairly effectual stuff. besides the undeniable fact that it became replaced for the action picture to grant Arwen extra to do. (She became an fairly minor character interior the e book with in basic terms one line and one function). yet this style of situation happens back and back.

the Eagles weren't "at his command", they were just friends who came to help--read the books. Also the 9 would still have been in the way, and there's no place to hide in the sky.
