well...I have no pics of myself doing the splits..but I have video from the dance squad I was on...lol And training myself to do them was a series of stretches each day, and every day I would push myself further until finally I would do them both ways..... Only took a few weeks.....

When I was an elementary school cheerleader we had to do stretches everyday to learn how to do a split. Simply sit on the ground with your legs in a V and slowly bend over and stretch to reach the toes of your right foot. Then repeat with your left.
Do this every day and you'll gradually see an increase in your flexibilty so you can acheive a split.

strech everyday for at least ten minutes. Sit on your butt with your legs together and touch your toes. Hold that for 30 seconds -1 minute, and don't bounce, do it like 3 times in a row, each time reaching farther till your face is touching your knees. Then strech your legs out (spread em baby) and reach for your toes again on each leg and hold it for 30 seconds-1 minute like above. Within a week or two your should be able to do the splits.

Basically you just need to strech out your muscles. Everyday you practice going into the splits and eventually you start to go further and further dowward until you reach a full split.

Strech often - best would be once a day.
Practice your splits every day.
side splits - keep your knees off the floor to go down lower.
Keep streaching and practicing and you'll get them. And remember "What you don't use you lose."

This iste has some good excersices and illustration...You HAVE to do this several times a day at least once a day in order to sustain it. I'm 35 now and still have all three splits. Good luck!

I would guess that first you need to do stretches to relax those muscles (sartorious, I think ?). Then when you can go down pretty far, have someone help you by gently pushing down on your shoulders. Do this daily until you can touch the floor with your thighs.
