Let the Police know first and get a crime number. The citizen advice burrow will be able to give you a number for an agency that can help you
(the government has got a special department for this)

The police are unlikely to help you as it takes a lot of time money and man power to find the other car which probably is uninsured and if the driver says it was not them the police can not do anything to help! unless it is recorded on camera and you have witnesses (it is possible to get copy's of roadside cameras again ask citizens advice for help with this)

hope this helps.

If you have a reg number or even a basic description than contact the police. If the evidence points to them there could be a 'leaving scene of accident' charge brought.

If not - don't CLAIM for it unless you have protected no-claims, but still REPORT it to the police incase a counter claim is made by the offenders. Imagine them claiming YOU drove into them, and you 'left the scene of an accident'.

Backing up the above: Gary IS wrong - the police do not contect your insurance company but probably WILL ask you (give you a 'producer' to present your documents (MOT, TAX, Licence & Insurance) at the local station to check your legality (just a formality)

This happened to me, too! I reported the incident to the police station nearest to where it happened, and a week later I had a call from the police station to say that the person responsible had been in to own up!! It turned out that the person involved had just passed her test, panicked when it happened and went off to phone her dad. In the meantime I had found my car and driven off (very cross, of course)! Had I not left my details with the police, I would have had to claim on my insurance to cover the cost. So I guess that's all you can do (and pray that the person will feel guilty and own up!)...

This is classified as a hit and run road traffic collision....and therefore you should report it to the police. Have you asked about to see if anyone witnessed it?? Is there any paint residue from the offending vehicle? Are you sure your premiums will go up as today most insurance companies give you protected no claims.
Good Luck!

Gary is wrong...reporting it to the police...the police don't get in touch with your insurance company.....but if you report it to your insurance company..they will get in touch with the police to see what action they took.

I would report it to police so that your in the clear,a car ran into my brothers car once and drove off ,about a week later my brother had a letter blaming him for running into his car.The bugger had got himself a witness from somewhere and it was looking at my brother losing his no claims bonus,it ended up as a knock for knock rather than go to court.

Don't know what $s of damage you are talking about. About the only thing you can do is not move the car and {uuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggg] call the law, but this will insure that your insurance WILL BE NOTIFIED!!!!!!!!!!

If you have a description of the car that damaged yours report it to the cops... if you have a protected bonus your premium should not increase, so it might be worth giving your ins company a bell...

u know...usually if you are not at fualt....your premium should not go up..unless it was your fault for illegal parking.......if i were you....i would call the police file a report.... call insurance company...file a claim and when the adjuster calls.....tell them what happened and if it was not your fault....tell them that you feel that since it was not your fault, the premium should not go up and if they say that no...your premium will go up.....then tell them that you will handle the situation yourself and get it done yourself ....it wont hurt to try...that way at least if they do decide that your were not at fault....the repair will be paid for and the premium wont go up...

Only if you got the other vehicles registration, otherwise if you don't want to contact your insurance company, you will have to pay for the repairs yourself.
