Well, there are many internet radio sites, and such...but they don't really let you choose what you listen to. just, similiar songs and artists. www.pandora.com will let you input a song, or artist and it will make a radio station that plays similiar songs by the style and genre of music.
Also, Yahoo's own launch will let you make a similiar radio station based on input, and watch music videos for free, if you have a relatively fast internet connection this will work fine. However, their selection is slightly limited to mainstream of most genres.

Actually if you use Yahoo Instant messenger, you can run the Yahoo Launchcast "radio" built into Yahoo messenger, which you edit to play your preferred music, and you can go to any website or do anything on your computer while you run it. Its free but after so many songs each month it restricts some of the options (like song skipping) but resets every month. best I ever found.. what I want.. when I want it.

www.pandora.com, its awesoem you put in a band name and you can hear some songs from that band and it also finds other bands similar to that artist for you
