The Yankees have had A LOT of injury problems this season (and still do), which is why they have to be the favorites to win the division. The sheer fact that Boston hasn't been able to run away with it should be enough to convince anybody.
Johnson always has better outings in the second half, Mussina is on track for the first 20-win season of his career, and Chien-Ming Wang has been simply incredible. Plus, the addition of Cory Lidle adds some much-needed stability to the end of their rotation.
Now that the Yanks have aquired names like Abreu and Wilson to fill in for the recovering Matsui and Sheffield, their offense is stronger than ever. A-Rod is bound to come out of his slump, Jeter's still batting around .350, Giambi is among the leading home run hitters in the league, it just seems that there's always someone stepping up on this staff.
I'd have to side with the New York Yankees to win the A.L. East.
(You can't win a division by 3.5 games, gg)

just for the record. Boston has the second highest payroll in baseball. so for all you red sox fans.. you cant use money as an excuse becasue it is not valid. the yankees will win, beacause they made moves when they needed too and are a game back with all t hose injuries... Boston should be 12 games ahead right now and they arent. GO YANKS

The Yankees injuries are behind us and we look forward to getting Matsui, Cano and Sheff back. The Injuries are mounting for the Sux. Wakefield, Trot Nixon, Clement and the captain Varitek. They will miss that bunch. I see the Yankess in a cake walk. And you can win a division by 3.5 or 4.5 or 5.5 games. It depends on how many games you play. Some rainouts aren't made up.
