Well in theory...it's not like you get a bill when you are born...but your point is a very good one, that the republicans (controlling all three branches of our government, hence no checks and balances) have put our nation in dire financial straits. In fact, I have read that our nation cannot support such debt and remain economically and politically strong. We already see the signs of it in how other nations are balking at us. We are in deep doo doo thanks to Bush and Company.

The debt has grown faster then expected! The $28,000 is what every American owes if we had to pay off our deficit right now! WE are borrowing $2 billion dollars a day to run this country. In 2001 when Bush was pushing his first tax cut we had a surplus of $240 billion. He said that even with the tax cut, in 2006 we would have a $300 billion surplus. instead we have a $300 billion deficit. He was only $600 billion off! And that doesn't include the money that is spent on the Iraqi Occupation and money borrowed from the Social Security Trust Fund.

I don't doubt the numbers, but desperate times call for desperate spending. . . and since 9/11, a war and Katrina, we are doing better than expected. The debt has fallen faster than previously expected.
