It wasn't a Christian Government. The French totally separated religion and politics during the French Revolution and the the paris commune, which happened between the Second and Third Republics also had a separtation of Church and State.

A lot of horrid things did go down in Europe. But I do agree that the Spanish where the worst

I'd say no. The Christian government of Spain was much worse in it's treatment of native people in Latin America.
