Files that have extension JPG or JPEG are images. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group; it's the organization that developed the format.
JPEG files may appear on your computer in many different ways. Some come with software (Windows, for example, may include wallpaper graphics in JPEG format), some can be downloaded from the Internet (images in Web pages are often JPEG files), some can come from your digital camera (most, if not all, digital cameras store photos in JPEG format), some may have been generated by your computer when you scanned things.

An extension is just the last three or four letters after a file name letting the computer know what type they are. .doc documents are Word documents. .xls are Excel. .jpg are image files. You don't 'get' an extention, you save a file as a certain type. If you have a picture up, click File>Save As There will be a drop-down menu at the bottom of the save window with an entire list of file extentions. Click the one that says .jpg after you have titled your document and hit 'save.'

Its stands for Joint Photographers Group. Its a type of image file similiar to .bmp and .gif. Usually photos are associated as .jpg (.jpeg) because .jpg supports millions of colors to be used providing sharp image clarity unlike .gif which only supports 256 colors.
You don't "get" a .jpg extension. Its just an option to use for saving image files through programs like paint, PhotoShop, etc.

The extension is the part of the filename that comes after the period. For example, with a file named SOMEFILE.DOC, the DOC part is the extension. A file with a .JPG extension is a JPEG, a kind of picture file.
Windows uses the extention to determine what kind of file it is, and which program to use to open it. Macintosh computers store that information inside the file itself, so they don't use extensions.
When you transfer a file from a Mac to a PC, you often need to rename the file with the correct extension for the PC to able to open it. Just change the file name from FILENAME to FILENAME.JPG and Windows will be able to open it.

the jpg extension is a pretty basic one. it's for pictures, and you "get it" if you have any pictures on your hard drive with the jpg extension.
