Use that lotion stuff that gives you a gradual tan. it works great and looks very natural. Olay and dove both have one.

self tan can dehydrate skin, leaving it dry and flaky, so apply a thick body lotion a week before you plan to tan - mediterranean bergamot orange & olive body butter from boots is really good and only £5.

remember too much tan is worse than no tan at all and skin looks much better with a slight shimmer than a full on tangerine tan. opt for products that give a subtle sunkissed glow, like sun shimmer by rimmel.

if you have fair skin take it easy with the fake tan as paler skin takes a long time to colour, but most brands now cater for lighter skin so make sure you use the light to medium variety and always do a patch test first.

before you apply your fake tan use a body scrub and then moisturise. to stop your eyebrows and hairline turning orange apply a little vaseline. another good tip is to wear disposible gloves when applying fake tan as your palms are easily stained orange. you can just take these from places like hospitals and petrol stations but if you can't find any just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after applying tan. soltan self-tan corrector wipes are good at getting rid of tan lines and are only 99p from boots!

don't give up on fake tan if it doesn't work for you at first as with most things practice makes perfect. maybe you could try a different brand? fake tan can work wonders and will even make you look more toned - it creates the illusion of shadows which can be slimming.

good luck honey <3

I have got the one that is a gradual tan that builds up. I found that went streaky too!!!! After much perseverance I discovered I was putting too much on.

Exfoliate first then use normal moisturiser. Then just use a 1p sized amount spread really well over all the skin.

Hope it works

Try Neutrogena's new one...They offer light-medium and medium-dark. Get the dual-chamber FOAM though, not the lotion...the lotion will leave streaks. The important part is to move quickly, but evenly. I love the stuff and have it down pat now. Don't use circular motions, do long sweeping motions up and down and side to side. Stay away from your armpits, inside your belly button, backs of knees, knee caps, scars, ankles, wrists, heels and toes. I usually wash my hands various time through out the applications. This should work for you. I do it three nights in a row. The key is to not wear anything tight and restricting. Stay out of the water for at LEAST 3 hours to let it set in. Try not to sit down too much, but don't break a sweat either. Good luck!

Ooo its scary stuff isnt it? I avoid it wherever possible but when I do indulge, a load of exfoliation first really helps and then moisturuser, let it sink in though for about 10 mins then slap your stuff on. Have a practise with one of those moisturuisers with the fake tan in like L'oreal. That way its not as orange if you screw up.

To get rid of the fake tan that has gone wrong try pure lemon juice (remove the bits first in a sieve, it's really hard to get rid of them all in the shower!) or you can buy special wipes at tesco/ boots. Instead of pure fake tan try using one of the moisturisers with fake tan e.g. johnson's holiday skin, they are much easier to apply - no steaky bits. Only down side is it takes a few days to see good results.

Try Jergens Natural Glow. It's inexpensive ($4-$5) and it doesn't make you orange. I have really pale skin, but I used the Medium instead of Fair, which made me darker faster. It really looks natural. It has a slight smell, but it's not unpleasant. Plus, it's a moisturizer. I started using it 10 days before my prom and it started working the very first day. Good luck!

Try Saint Tropez - it's the best - you can slap it on - you can see where you've done and it doesn't steak. It takes a while but you end up with an expensive looking carribbean tan - wonderful.
