As a singer in a band I'll give you the following pointers:
1 don't feel embarrased about your singing as my musics teacher once told me everyone can sing you just have to dare.
2 Check if you can hold a tone, if not get help
3 learn to sing in key, it helps if someone can give you a key with an instrument (like a piano)
4 get the feel of a song: If you really want to interpret any kind of music (except maybe childrens songs) you'll have to be able to get the feeling that a certain song has: this is the hardest part as no one can learn it, it takes a good level of empathy. a few pointers are listen to the story and try to get what is being told; try to get the feelings the singer is giving to you. As I said this is very hard to do as it can not be learnt but it is what separates a good singer from mediocre one.
5Learn lyrics by heart and learn to improvise if you certainly lose your lines: nothing is more embarassing than a singer having to use a written text or just shutting up because he forgot
6 learn to use your stomach and midrif to push air out of your throat you'll notice you'll be able to sing much deeper and much louder this way. how to do this tighten your abs breathe in deep through your nose and try to push the air out through the tension in your gut and scream loudly
last but not least practice practice and more practice

I'm afraid i don't know that song (lol)

it only really gets better with time. Try taking some singing lessons, or put on the radio and sing along. But also, sometimes it's just the way it is, some people can natrually sing well, others can't.

Just keep trying. =)

If you dont know that you can sing or not, go and see a voice coach, and determine if your voice is in perfect pitch, if not, stick to your normal day time job. Any one can sing, but very few have perfect pitch
