The Pokerus, or Pokemon Virus, is something that your Pokemon catch from battling a wild Pokemon that carries it. While infected, your Pokemon grow at an exceptional rate because the Pokerus doubles the EV's your Pokemon earn while battling (more on that later). The Pokerus goes away on its own after a short time--the only way to keep it is to take an infected Pokemon and store it in a box on Bill's PC. Any other Pokemon placed in that box should also contract the Pokerus, but run the risk of getting over it as long as they are in your party.

The Pokerus is very good for training Pokemon because it doubles the EV's your Pokemon earns. An EV means Effort Value: any Pokemon you battle will earn Experience Points and Effort Values. For example, battling wild Rattatta nets you one EV for speed. Battle (and faint) four of them, and you get one extra Speed stat point in addition to the normal growth for your Pokemon. The Pokerus doubles the EV's you earn for battling; if you fight one wild Rattatta, your Pokemon will gain 2 EV's for speed instead of one, which helps your Pokemon's speed grow faster.

Every Pokemon has different EV's; in fact, some will give you 2 or 3 EV's in one stat or EV's in multiple stats. The EV's you earn, however, stay the same for each species of Pokemon (Rattatta only give you speed EV's). If you take a Pokerus-infected Pokemon with a nature that boosts speed and battle wild Pokemon that net you speed EV's, you can dramatically raise the stat. This works for all stats. The only drawback is that a Pokemon can only earn a total of 255 EV's; once a Pokemon has reached that level EV's will no longer impact any stat.

Needless to say, the Pokerus is extremely good and just as rare. If you want to raise some tough Pokemon quickly, keep one infected in a box so that you can infect others and train them quickly. For specific EV's for each Pokemon, try Serebii.net or email.

There's nothing that you can do about it. They will catch on fire and explode. the virus will spread and the whole island will be devoid of life because all of the trainers' pokemon exploded them.

I heard that you can get a virus in pokemon silver and gold too but It never happened to me after 200+ hours of training them.
