We have an old TIVO box which was used with a satellite hookup. Due to poor reception, we're going back to cable and are being told we can't use the TIVO. Is this true? And if not, how would we do the hookup from the cable box? We also have a DVD/VCR recorder in the mix.

Actually the answer is... it depends. If you have an old TiVo box, it might not be possible. However latest Series2 TiVo models will handle both cable and satellite hookups (even at the same time).

No. The problem is, that the Directv TiVo is set for reception on the satellite frequencies, which are not the same as the ones used by cable.
Unfortunately (based on Directv demands) the TiVos were not set up for direct video input, with which one could have gone around that.
They wanted to make sure that using 'their' equipment you were strictly dependent on them. Worked well for them
Check your TiVO, IFit has a video input, you may be able to use it by going from the video output of the cable box to it, and then go from the TiVo video output to the TV (or AV receiver, if you have one).

answer is no you wont be able to use the tivo w cable simply because dtv uses the access card to provide your prog even if you instll the tivo w out the card wont get any pic...and w cable some have cable cards but made for cable ready tvs w card slot so again doesnt matter how the tivo is connected w out card which tells box your prog u wont have any service no other cards will work must be issued from dtv some tivos you can connect to tv and simply watch prog already saved on hard drive w out sat in lines but no live prog and there is always the stand alone tivo not from dtv

Person above is like half correct. No you cannot use the box, but the reason is that the Tivo/Directv units record the bitstream mpeg video, and does not have an mpeg encoder on board. This is also the reason there is no quality setting on the Directtv units, like there is on the stand alone ones

To use a Tivo you have to have a subscription to Tivo.
You might try something with the off air input and see what you can come up with.
You need to just go buy a stand alone tivo.

NO, and the reason is that cable uses a different modulation scheme (not the same a encoding) so the RF receivers will not work.
