Zero or nine. It depends on how you take the 1 away. Whether subtracting (10 - 1 = ) or crossing the one off of the number 10. Or if you are doing the taking from someone else than you have 1. The 1 that you took from the ten.

a) if you take one from 10 YOU will have one

b) 10 - 1 = 9
