If someone hosts a website from work that is inappropriate, could that damage the company in any way or be traced back to the company. Is there any reason why an employee would do that using company computers rather than his own?

If you host any website FROM WORK, you are essentially stealing resources from your employer. That alone is grounds for termination regardless of the sites contents. If you host an 'inappropriate' site, your employer may object even if you don't use their computers.

Of course it would be a problem. Finding the IP address of a business is a snap and if the employee's activities are traced back to the company's IP, both could be banned from mail delivery systems around the world.

The only reasons to do this are stupidity and greed. Too stupid to realize what problems you are causing and not willing to fork out a little money for your own web host.

monitoring the website from the office might be OK but hosting it from your company's network is probably a big no no
First it is easily traced, second it is unethical, third depending on what happens the company could be liable. You can do this from home unless you have a complete a-ok from your boss

The first thing I would do as an employer is fire your worthless a*ss... and if you caused my company to lose business or damage my reputation, I would sue your worthless a*ss!!
