The roots of cheerleaders go back to college football in the 19th century. The first cheerleaders were male (being for the fact that the Ivy League Universities and Military Academies were all male prior to 1970). They were there to for the purpose of getting the fans, mostly other students, to yell loudly and encourage the team. Female cheerleaders came into picture after World War II. Television coverage of college football games beginning in the late 1940's also encourged female cheerleaders, since television directors like seeing pretty girls in short skirts jumping around.
Also the fact that in the USA football and basketball have always been run mainly through the school systems(high school college) compared to most other nations(except Japan) using youth clubs, encourages the use of the other students to cheer teams on.

I honestly don't know. They serve no purpose whatsoever. I would like to see cheerleading eliminated entirely. In pro sports or college level, especially football, does anyone, other than their own friends and families, pay any attention to them? Can they really get a crowd of sixty to a hundred thousand people fired up? That rubbish may work in high school, but not at any level higher. And I have watched once or twice, portions of the cheerleading championships on tv just so I could criticize it. How moronic is that? All the robotic machinations they go through. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk.

They are nice to look at and bring in money for things like calendars. It is also about traditions like the Dallas Cowboy's cheerleaders.

They're terrific to look at as well as they are good for marketing and the cheerleaders actually make appearances at places to help raise money for causes.

Scantily clad beautiful energetic women AND helping cure disease? I'm in.
