In this black screen you're talking about, it shows several options on how to start windows... This screen usually pops up when your system crash or when Windows was unsuccessful in loading from the previous session. Or you can also get to this screen by pressing F8 before Windows load.
This is the Advance Option Menu for Windows.
It gives you a choice to boot from these options:
Safe Mode, VGA Mode, Debugging Mode, etc...
1. The option you want to use is "Last Known Good Configuration."
2. After choosing this option, hit ENTER, and Windows will try to load from the last time it was successful in loading.
3. If this does not work, then you need to repair your OS installation.
4. To do this, you need to pop your Windows CD and boot from it, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Hope this helps.

When you are that screen, then, use your down arrow key to select the "safe mode option" and you should be able to get at least into windows so that you can fix the problem. Then once you have sorted the problem out, then shut down the computer down properly and that black scrren should not come up next time. The reason that black screen comes up is because you either did not shut the computer down properly or there is some other issue that caused the computer to shutdown impoperly.

You properly had a problem at or just before Shutdown
the screen gives you I think 4 or 5 options do Save Mode first and check for anything you just done prior of shut down eg. Installed a new Programe? if so uninstall it and try to restart. good Luck!

As stated before you should try booting up in safe mode and then restarting and booting up in normal... if this dose not work you are gonna have to reboot in Safe Mode again and insert your Windows CD and run the "Repair" function. This in theory should repair windows with any lost or missing system.dlls that could have been corrupt.

Try starting in Safe Mode. If your computer still won't start, you'll probably need to take it to a shop to fix the problem.
