Let's take the number 6.

2 and 3 are FACTORS of 6 because they divide evenly INTO 6

12 and 18 are MULTIPLES of 6 because 6 divides evenly into them.

Factors of a number are the numbers that the number can evenly split into, like 5 is a factor of 20 but 3 isn't. There are a finite number of factors for any given number.
Multiples of a number are numbers that have that number as its factor, like 24 and 36 are multiples of 12. To put it in another way, multiples are numbers that are of the form of the number multiplied by a whole number.

Both answers that I read before I posted are correct. But I also find that people use the two terms almost interchangably. Sometimes you have to make sure you are using them the way you see them used in your math class, book, or teacher.

In my mind a multiple is a number that is used to get an answer, and a factor is a number that the answer can be gotten if you multiply it with another number.

Sort of circular logic and really saying the same thing just forwards and backwards. The real key is to find out how they are using the words in your place and try to mimic the termonology.

8 and 10 are the factors
10*5=50
50 is a multiple of 10
