My father told me that it was yet another Lennon-McCartney creation and they let another band release the song. It was also in a Beatles guitar book I happened to be reading. You know, the song goes, "I don't care what they say I won't stay in a world without love." It definitley sounds like a Beatles-type melody and chord progression. And who was the band that made it famous?

Yes, this is a John Lennon/Paul McCartney song. It was originally recorded by The Mavericks. This is the band you are probably thinking of. Recently redone by Vonda Shepard.

"A World Without Love" was a chart-topping song written by Lennon/McCartney (Northern Songs Ltd.) in 1964, and recorded by Peter Asher and Gordon Waller (as Peter & Gordon).

Peter & Gordon were among the first musicians to obtain the privilege to record a Lennon/McCartney track. Paul McCartney was dating Jane Asher, an aspiring English actress. Jane Asher was Peter Asher's sister, leading him and McCartney to become friends.
