A turbo charger is a turbine that is powered by exhaust gases from the engine to force more air into the combustion chamber. Because the engine gives off more heat is merely a bi-product of the added combustion of the engine. When the engine combusts you burn a certain amount of a fuel/air mixture. The turbo charger forces more air and thus more fuel into the combustion chamber. The result is you are burning more of the mixture which then generates more power per stroke. The extra heat generation is only a result of more power being produced not the cause of it.

An alternative is the super charger in which the turbine is powered by a belt driven by the crank shaft.

A turbo is basically like a hair dryer. It uses exhaust gas to spin a wheel that forces more air into the combustion chamber. More air means you can add more fuel to get a hotter burn thus more power.
