If you have a Windows XP based computer you can click on the Windows key (between the Ctrl and Alt keys) and "L" key at the same time,. This will lock it with the password you have set for that account.

This group has given you 3 different and valid options:
1. Set up a User account + password in windows so windows requests a logon password. Benefit: Secure plus you actually could have a time when you want to give another person access to your computer programs but not your private documents. This will do it.
2. set BIOS password. Benefit: Most secure. Operating system independent. You need it to start computer but once on there is no further protection. Forget and leave it on and you dont have security.
3. Screensaver password: This is the easiest to set but the least secure option. To get around this all someone has to do is reboot your computer.
My suggestion: Do both 1. and 3.

To lock your computer all you need is a password that your kids do not know or could not guess. To password protect your computer go to Start --> Control Panel --> User Accounts then select your computer account and choose create password. I am unsure of the things you are trying to prevent them from doing, but there are a number of commercial programs that allow you to monitor what has been done on the computer while you were gone.

It depends on the OS. I guess, that u don't want ur children to switch on the computer. In any case, it's impossible to lock ur computer. They will find there own ways. But, there are few tricks to lock and make files or even ur computer inaccessible.
For windows 98se there is a file win.com search for it in C:\windows or C:\ rename it to any other name like lock.com etc., the extension of the file should be .com only. Now, whenever u try to log into computer using windows 98se, u will just enter into dos mode. if u type lock (i.e., for lock.com (the name we gave earlier) it will open windows. Else no chance.
For windows xp u can create only one user account by going to control panel and making it as administrator and setting a password. and turning the guest account off. this will also help u.
If u want a simple step. go to bios setup (for some systems it says hit del or hit F10 while booting and enter the system bios setup and somewhere there will be a option ask for password u need to set it always something like that) and whenever u try to switch on ur computer first u need to enter the password.
there is also a free software (small one) which i have if u want i can send it to u thru mail. but u need to contact me at j2v2k6-tech@yahoo.co.in

Right click on the desktop and select properties from the menu that appears
Go to the screen saver tab
Near the middle of the screen you can set how long it is before the screen saver kicks in. You can also Password Protect it
If you set a password there, they can not get the screen saver to shut down without the password.
That will NOT prevent them from just turning off the computer and rebooting it
You will want to set a password for windows itself to keep them from doing that (Control Panel > User Accounts. Go under your account and set a password. Remove any other accounts)

the simplest way is to use a BIOS password...
usually when your computer starts up you can see a message telling you "press this or that key to enter bios setup"
if you press this key then you get to the BIOS menus... it is different per computer so i can't tell you exactly how, but there you should have the option to password protect the computer.
by doing that, it will become that when the computer is started it is mandatory to key in a password.
be careful not to forget this password because it is difficult (yet possible with the aid of a technician) to recover from it.
