In the late 1800's and early 1900's the Navy had a big base there. They use to discharge a lot of gays for being homosexual. Often enough gays would be discharged in SanFrancisco because it was where the Navy would leave from and Sail to first from making trips across the Pacific. Many discharged homosexuals decided to stay there and make the best of it. After all - with a discharge for homosexuality on their record - many certainly did not want to or could not go back home in those days! It was better to stay in an accepting place with other gays! Since so many gay men were there, other gays decided to move there too.
In addition - San Francisco has always been a tolerant place that accepts people from all walks of life.

San Francisco has always been a diverse place, and open to new and different ideas and people. It has a richness in culture that is open to gay people, so they have gravitated there.
But every large city has it's gay population, and usually a gay neighborhood, I live near Chicago, which has a huge gay ghetto, which has recently undergone gentrification, scattering low and moderate gay folk all over the city.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but -
* The weather is terrific
* The scenery is fantastic and close by (Tahoe, Yosemite, ocean, bay)
But most importantly,
* The society tends to be more inclusive, inviting, diverse and LBGT-friendly than any other I have lived in. Don't forget that SF was one of the first places with gay elected leaders, domestic partner benefits, etc. etc.
I hope this helps!
FYI you should expect a lot of basher responses from people outside of SF CA. Ignore them. They don't live here.

Wish I could live in S.F. Unfortunately my rich gay brothers drove up estate prices so much that I can only dream about ever living in the Bay Area.
In answer to your question: I believe that gays love to live in the best places. S.F is undeniably one of the best places on earth. If there is an earth quake, this will all be a matter of opinion eh? lol

Openly homosexual people make up a sufficiently large
part of the population where they are able to ensure laws
and regulations are upheld to protect the openly homosexual.
Therefore, it is safe for them. More move there, the laws
are upheld even better, and it gets safer.
Moreover, it is safer compared to other places without the
large openly homosexual population. There are other
places that also have an openly homosexual population
(such as Provincetown, MA) where the same effect is
noticable - safety brings numbers.
Its too bad (i.e. a national disgrace) that homosexuals feel
so unsafe in other places that they are forced to cluster.

We live everywhere around this world. However there are larger concentrations of gay people in larger cities. Where we are more accepted.
However I can assure you that we are in the small country towns as well. I know I am preparing to move to my new ranch in the middle of BFE Missouri. the nearest town had a population of 584.
