The best universities on the West Coast are Cal Tech, Stanford, UC Berkeley and UCLA.
They are all excellent. Stanford is the highest ranked for undergraduates. Cal Tech and UC Berkeley are the best places for engineering (though the others are good).
UC Berkeley is probably the best graduate school in the country (overall) -- better than the Ivy League schools. It is ranked in the top five in nearly everything.

I think it depends on what you are looking to study. But there are several good schools here on the west coast, such as Berkley, Stanford, UCLA, and USC, other good schools may be Cal Poly Pomona/San Luis Obispo, Oregon State University....the list goes on!

The University of Washington is also a very good school, though not as good as some already cited. Depends on what you want to major in...
