Oh, what gives? I ask a question and the majority of the replies I get from you guys are a bunch of one liners and wise cracks. There are other places to do that. Try some forums or blogs... not here! I ask questions because I don't have the free time to do research. But, thanks to you guys I know what my next question is going to be...

alienorgy69 besides the name you are right on point. Yeah, I understand that the question is ambiguous and vague but, at least you made an effort and provided what you know. I'd prefer your answer over something like "0%" or "startrek geeks 2%" thats all... So basically I'm saying that when I ask a question and wait around for an answer I expect to get something with some real thinking behind it, not something like "Hmm... I have a punchline for that one!".

It's hard to estimate that. Remember a lot of the world population literally doesn't have the education level to understand what our solar system is.

In the US you often see statistics based on surveys claiming numbers as high as 90% of those surveyed believe it is a possibility. But again it's hard to be certain with such a small percentage of people being asked.

Other cultures may for various reasons have religious dissent to the notion of extra terrestrial life as well. So asking what percentage of the world believes that is something that can't really be answered without extensive study.

Dont get pissed at these answers because the question is ambiguous and vague. What percent of the world population stinks? What percent of the world population likes ice cream? I mean, if you rephrased it to be a little more relevant then you'd get better answers. Ok? So why do you rule out life within our solar system? I think that realistically there has to be life outside the solar system in the infinity of space. But the more interesting thing to ponder would be to wonder if in the extreme heat of venus can bacteria live like they do in the deep sea vents here on earth? Can life live beneath the ice of Titan? Think about these things. I am certain there is life outside the solar system but as to the advancement and progression of that life is up for debate. But logically it is a certainty.

nicely each and each time this question comes up it is how I placed it: There are some one hundred billion to 200 billion stars in our galaxy on my own. Then there are some one hundred to 200 billion (or greater) galaxies interior the universe. no longer only that the universe is approximately 13.5 billion years outdated. Our universe is an rather massive place. good it off with the potential for dissimilar universes or maybe replace realities then statistically the opportunities that there is no different life available different than right it is so low that it may well be completely bizzar if we've been the only smart life varieties in existance. So yeah i think there are different varieties available. no longer that they only exist now yet that additionally they the two as quickly as existed or which will sooner or later exist as nicely. The universe isn't likely everywhere any time quickly. So who knows what the destiny has in keep. playstation no longer only are there endless stars, yet endless bodies orbiting them.

Don't know about the world, but I read a survey once about US population. Only 15%. But the percentage increased dramatically when the same question was put in a different way---"Do you believe life can exist outside of the solar system"

Not sure on percent, but I do. Come on Earth can't have the only life on it and I'm not saying "aliens", I 'm talking about algae and other small life forms too. Its a big Universe, something else has to be out there.

Leaving out religious people who believe in a heaven, I think the percentage must be still quite high.
But, then ... people love to believe just anything. The more fantastic the better!

Are you gonna figure out the percentage? I'm a believer, if you are talking about life on other planets. Let me know what you come up with.

Well, since SETI has been covering up signals from intelligent aliens for a while, the percentage is pretty low. Why isn't this news?

Most people don't know what the solar system is.
