For instance, not being able to display your national flag without being labelled some sort of racist. It seems that the people who this is meant to offend couldn't care less and it's the 'do gooders' who create the tension and bad feeling by blowing things out of proportion

My goodness you talk so much sense! We shouldn't put up with it cos every 2mins the way you express something has to be changed so's it's "PC". The world has gone mad. The so-called 'do-gooders' are the worst, with their Orwellian Newspeak and trivial quibbles. Leave us alone!!!

Because the media makes such a stinking big deal out of nothing ... especially on a slow news day, Personally, I'm sick of it and so are all the people I care about. When the people of this nation decide to finally get over themselves and realize that people don't really think that much about them, maybe then things will change.

It's called inertia. Once something has become accepted, it takes a long time for it to become less 'meaningful' to the masses.
Think of the word 'cool' (which I hate and never use in its common usage). People with limited vocabulary think of everything as 'cool'.
Some go as far as writing it kewl, which I find a little better, except it still sounds the same.
In time these things fade, when enough people stop using it.
There is a way to accelerate stopping 'political correctness'. DON'T follow its demands. If enough people stop going by it and just speak their minds (as I do!), it'll come into disuse and disappear.
Bill Maher has started that with his show 'Politically incorrect'.
I am not a politician, so SCREW POLITICAL CORRECTNESS! :-)
And if you don't like that, who cares? Observe the mistletoe attached to my coat tails. ;-)

if your referring to the world cup then I agree can you imagine going to Brazil as an English person and saying can you not put your Brazilian flags out because I'm English, don't think you would last to long in Rio! If people want to be in other countries they must respect that countries right to celebrate their country's sports, religions, events etc

Because that is seen as being the political correct thing to do, put up with it... :/

I think it is on the downward trend because it was blown out of proportion and now people are reacting against that, as you are.

do you know that you cant call a black board a black board anymore, you gotta call it a chalk board!!!! but a white board is still a white board!

i am a firm bleliever in making issues like racism and political correctness aware to people so it is not such a tabboo subject....i think the more you hide it the more it will boil over and be ignored when it is ever present!

I know what you mean. It's good to speak out about it when you feel it is too extreme.

But I think we need some place to start from, because it's important to respect each other.

So I would keep "political correctness" but encourage more debate about it.

In my experience, most people are afraid of what their neighbor might be thinking of them; it's hard to deal with criticism or looks of horror.

There are frivolous lawsuits against that sort of brashly independent thinking!
