I don't know that "tacky" is the right word to describe it, but I wouldn't consider it the height of professionalism. It sounds to me like you have way more to offer an employer than a pretty face. Besides, if you find a prospective employer who would be swayed by looks over qualifications, what kind of work environment would that be? Would you really want to work for or with such a person?

I understand what you are saying, but consider that American companies have laws which do not allow discrimination because of race, religion, etc. So good looks really don't help you to get a job. Unless of course you want to be a model, a TV host or other career which requires a certain attractive appearance. Concentrate on the content of your resume' because that is what HR people look for...a well written summary of YOU. Then, once you get that personal interview, you can WoW them with your charm and good looks ;)

I, myself, wouldn't automatically throw out a resume with a picture. But it is 2006. Fancy resumes in many fields have gone the way of Disco.
You spent time in HR. You know that you are going to blend in if you are sending resumes to people. If you don't want to blend in, you need contacts. If you cannot make contacts outside of the professional sourcing industry, you should bite the bullet and look for headhunters who specialize in some aspect that is consistent with your needs and desires. Otherwise, picture or not, you are in the stack.

A symbol may or may not be appropriate. ie a musical note for a musician or bread for a baker.
But a picture of oneself on a resume is definately not the way to go.

You really do not want to get a job because you look good. You will find yourself working for a sleezy hiring manager who only hired you because you are eye candy for him. You want to get a job based on your experience and what you can bring to the table. Your looks should have no bearing on how successful you will be. It may help if you are applying for a Marketing position where looks help but not for an office job.

Unless you are a model or actor, it is both tacky and unprofessional.

Not really unprofessional, but a little flamboyant. If you're doing it just to show you're good-looking, I'd pass on doing it.

Headshots are for models and actors. No way I would do it.
