History.
At one time, England wanted to rule the whole of the UK and because we put up a fight we were deemed to be these stereotypes.
I don't know where it comes from. I myself am Scottish and mean is definately not a word I would use to describe us as a nation! We are quite the opposite actually! And it only seems to be English people who think this of us - most of the rest of the world think of us as the kind, fun-loving, generous people we are. Of course there are exceptions to this as there are in any nation! I have never been to Ireland but I dont think they can all be stupid lol. Each country has its fair share of stupid people!
I have travelled all over the UK and I am not biased against the English nor do I dislike them - I have met many people there who were as nice as they come. However, I did happen to come across some extremely rude English people too. There were a lot of them who had absolutely no manners e.g. holding doors open for you and they could be extremely selfish and arrogant too but this cannot be true for them all!

I think it comes from a time when Scottish lords were being stripped of their lands by the English, so they had to work harder to keep up appearences. The only way they could do this was to watch every penny. The issue with the irish probably came from the fact most Irish people couldnt speak English and when they understood what was being asked of them just didnt do it. It was easier for the English to say there studip than to say they hate us and we cant be bothered understanding them. Dont worry though what the Scottish nad Irish think of them is considerably worse!

The english hundreds of years ago needed reasons to explain why they were invading lands and taking power. So the Irish were given the label of thick idiots who couldn't run a country and needed the 'help' of the english.

probably in the same place as the one of the
drunken british yobbo.
Actually all countries and languages have them
In Spain the stupid are from LEPE or Galicia, the mean are the catalonians
in France the stupid are the belgians and swiss, the tight fisted or mean those from Auvergne.
All these stereotypes should be banned! Even if sometimes they actually DO fit someone! ;-)
