My wife is turning 32 next week, I am taking her on vacation, but wanted to do something fun with maybe 8 more people when we return. Any ideas? We live close to NYC.

I don't know NYC at all, never even been there... but an idea...
First, make reservations at a restaurant you both love- maybe one that has special meaning for you both.
Second, get the restaurant in on the plan and have your friends meet you there (yes, turn this part into a surprise...If you've already gone for a trip... she would never expect something else! Unless you've already told her...)
Third, invite friends- her good friends, maybe even friends that she talks about all the time, but hasn't seen in a while. Include that it is a surprise (or not) and then make sure to have a theme... like Hawaii, black tie, etc.
Fourth, elect a third party that can help with the details, so your wife would not be suspicious.
Fifth, have a great time!

karaoke - there are tons of options in NYC. Also, you could go to the Central Park Zoo - not as crazy as it sounds. Go shopping on MAdison Ave and stop to have lunch at Barney's or go to a nice dinner and then to a broadway show after - something fun like Jersey Boys or Spamalot would be good.

How about a karaoke party, it would ideally suit a group of about 8 and would not cost to much, also its lots of fun.

How about a barbeque party with everyone dressed in the clothes of the tropical island's natives?

Take her to the see the statue of liberty if you have done that. Go cruising, shopping, and then all of y'all go out to dinner. Surprise her on the dinner thing.

Have one big party - rent out a room, get a band etc and celebrate.

take her to some where sshe has never been and bring maybe two or three friends take her to a place she wants to go that she always talks about going to
