The difference is in the release of the medication. Adderall is usually taken more then once a day. Adderall XR is the extended release version and is usually only taken once a day.
As for the dosage it should be worked out with your doctor as to how much and which is best for you.

First of all Adderall and Ritalin are two different stimulants, so one might work for someone whereas the other wouldn't. Second, the XR in Adderall XR stands for extended release, it will last all day. With regular Ritalin, doses can be given up to every 3 to 6 hours because it is metabolized quickly. Both these drugs do come in regular and extended release forms. Be aware that they are both stimulants and can cause loss of appetite, weight gain, shakiness and some moodiness. Fortunately because it is so fast acting, some of the side effects are caught quickly.

XR is extended release. They usually start with regular Adderall at the lowest dose and then "tweak" it from there, depending on what works. Sometimes it wears off on the kids in the afternoon, and they can't get thru homework, so they either up the dose or try the XR. Speak to the doctor and make sure the patient gets an accurate and complete evaluation for ADD.

Recipe? Okay the XR is extended release, meaning the effect will be slower and last a longer time period. The dose at which one would start is the dose prescribed by your DR

XR, like stated numerous times, is extended release. The purpose of that is so you only have to take one dose a day as opposed to numerous. The extended release works throughout the day to provide relief from whatever you may be ailing from.

Adderall XR or any drug that has er or xr at the end means extended release and the drugs composition is changed n the way it breaks down in the body. Some drugs are absorbed in the intestines and some are in other places where the release is more immediate and therefore the effects wear off sooner.
Why in the heck would you want to start on that junk? Find another way! like behavioral change and structured modification. It takes longer but you have the chance of actually GETTING BETTER!
