Americans have a heathy appetite for "stuff" and it is being manufactured at a fraction of the cost if it were made here.
I also believe we a "disposable mentality" that fits the Chinese business model at the current time. Just buy it now - if it breaks throw it away.
There are alot of young people just starting their lives who benefit from the cheap product. We have surrendered our manufacturing base for this.

Because we want inexpensive made items. If you want your product to be sold at walmart you are encouraged to reduce you manufacturing costs by sending the jobs to china so that walmart can sell them cheap, thus increasing their profit. This has worked very well for walmart and china.
Now you know why China's economy is experience unprecedented growth, and why their demand for oil is getting closer to the US's daily. So while you save a few cents buying inexpensive items made in China, the effects are jobs going away and gas prices increasing.

Because Americans buy it - the slogan buy American has never worked - as well as many Americans - because we want to buy cheap. Some things we buy are harmful to more than our economy - child labor sometimes leads to a life of blindness. America is one of the few countries that doesn't exploit it's children, but the same people do not mind exploiting another countries children - But before we get too sad about that - you must remember that most of the parents in these other countries will stap a bomb on their children and send them out to get a chocolate bar from an American soldier or sell them to a pedifile.

Most of it is sold through Wal*Mart and by selling the Chinese junk the margins go from 3% for US goods sold to 30% to 40% for the Chinese junk. It looks better on the P&L and makes the investors happy.

Most of its not junk.
And its cheaper than we can make it.
And most people cannot afford to spend money they could keep.
