G'day fellow pine enthusiasts. From a forestry / commercial perspective the lower branches are removed to provide for a cleaner sawlog. You know? Less knots in the timber, so better appearance grade and stronger timber. The higher you can prune the more valuable the tree will become in the future.
Sorry to be mentioning timber harvesting in the garden pages, hope I haven't offended any of you good folk.

Because the lower branches prevent anything from growing in that area. By removing those branches, grass, flowers, etc can be planted around the base.
A second reason is to make it look older.
Only reletively young pine trees have branches near the bottom, older ones (30+ years) will NOT have branches close to the bottom. Landscapers are attempting to make a 10 year old tree look older.

Those limbs will eventually die due to all the nutrients going to the top of the tree once it reaches a certain height. By trimming them, they also allow those nutrients to aid in the trees overall fitness and height... AND it keeps you from hitting your head, lol!
Although some believe it aids in better under growth, pine trees cause acidity buildup in the soil so grass and most shrubs won't grow unless the soil is amended to move the soil more alkaline.

you can use long handles pruners or a small bush trimmer- we have used both.
It makes the pine tree healthier. I live in Colorado go up in the mtns- those pines are tall and you cant even reach the lower branches on most..

The main reason is it makes them easier to trim around. Then of course there are other reason such as dying and large snowfalls causing them to break easier. It also makes it nicer if your child's ball rolls under the tree to get it out. Who wants to climb through the tree, get covered with sap, and stuck by sometimes harsh pine needles to get the ball out?

many reasons, it's prettier, one can get under them to clean out the dropping from the tree (so the ground can breathe and the tree can get more moisture and lesser mold)
it's nicer looking, one can mow under the tree to keep the grasses from choking out the roots... make it available for one to get under the tree and keep the soil loose and feed the soil if nessesary.. many reasons also i've missed.
