If they win the NL West, then they've got a chance.
Over a 162-game season, the good teams usually rise to the top. Once the postseason starts, however, and you have a best-of-seven, it's pretty wide open. All it takes is a couple of pitchers getting hot, and any team can suddenly be in the World Series.
The odds are against the Padres, but I don't think your friend is an idiot for giving the Pads a shot.

Well, he's not a COMPLETE idiot. As leaders in their division, they've got a better shot than most MLB teams. But even if they maintain that lead in their tight division and make it to the post season, I don't see them getting past either the Mets or Cardinals. If they DO get past the rest of the NL, I really don't see them getting past either the Tigers, Red Sox or Yanks, one of which will probably win the AL Pennant.
