Brits who travel or live in the USA, what strikes you which is almost archetypical about the Americans, considering anything from humour, cuisine, fashion, the Language to, say, the transport system and foot/soccer. Tell anecdotes if you have any.
I put the same question, the other way round to Yankees.

First of all, they won't appreciate being called Yankees, unless they're from the north-east.

I find Americans very polite people who never forget a face. Whenever I enter a community in the USA I feel I am done so with good humour and with a genuine welcome. I feel rules can be strict at times - when I smoked I was asked for a ID at 30 years old - but I understand it is a nation which likes to protect its own.

One part of the nation I would love to work in is Wyoming but it would be impossible as I do not drive. I feel if you can't drive in the wide open spaces you just cannot travel and explore some of your local communities let alone the nation.

All Americans are Yanks.

Americans just don't understand dance music (they call it Techno or Electro). Which is really surprising as House Music was invented in Chicago!

Also they play pool on big tables and I almost got in a fight because their Pool rules are really wierd. But they don't fight in bars like the English do. My brother told me that was because if you beat a man in a fight, he'll be in the car park waiting for you with a gun when you leave!

Americans mostly like the English and they like Scottish even more as they all have a distant relative who came from Scotland or Ireland!

Americans love big cars and airconditioning systems and always have the Aircon on too much so it's really freezing.

...oh and the beer is too weak, but the food is great and there is always loads of it.

I'm a British, I've met both Americans and British who are intelligent, articulate and a joy to spend time with, I've also met both nationalities at the other end of the spectrum. But I think that's true of all nationalities.

On holiday in the States I was fed-up with Americans thinking I was an Australian Aborigine, but I enjoyed the Dunkin Doughnuts - fabulous.

my husband is from Scotland, and I lived there with him (before we were married) for 14 months.
We went into Tesco's one day (only been in Scotland for about a week) and I over heard someone say they had 5 squid in their pocket. When I asked my husband he laughed and said "no its quid".

Also, because I'm from the mid-west (Indiana) and the weather that year was warmer then normal, I started wearing sandals and shorts in May and didn't stop until October...boy I got some crazy looks from people. Even was told "oh your American" by one person who was staring at me when I asked if something was wrong.

I miss Scotland...the people were wonderful, so laid back, and didn't seem to be in a hurry.

I don't think they would like it if I called them Yankees....

But as a Brit, I notice first of all that they either seem to hyper healthy and good looking with fantastic teeth, or very overweight.

(I am generalising)

In personality I would say that Americans are kind, polite and generous, but don't have very good taste.

They seem interested in British culture, which is nice.

I like them!

you're not asking much are you? In my experience they are loud, dress loudly, eat big, talk big, and are completely insensitive. I would avoid them like the plague and they would not recognise humour if it hit them on the face
