why is muslims sometimes spelt as moslems....just wondering?

i'm not muslim but i do live in an islamic country(malaysia) and i've never known any muslims who spell it as moslems...

Muslim is a word in arabic (in use since the 17th. century.)
It literally means "One who surrenders himself to God" In reference to the persons adhering to the Islamic faith.

The variants to this name are:
Moslem (until recently the name most widely used in english)
Mussulman - Mussalman - Mussulmans
(these last three are from the turkish: müslüman & from the persian: musulmãn)

i have noticed that the word is spelt Muslims in Malaysia, Spore and Indonesia but Moslems by others from the middle east and western countries and musulman from the Indian subcontinent. Whether it be muslims, moslems, musulman etc ...they all refer to those who testify that Allah is the only One God and that the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, is the Last Messenger of Allah.

Reality Riot, Gary Coleman and Papa, ... you're all so dumb. The Brits colonized Malaysia, Gary Coleman the actor is short and black, and spelled or spelt isnt relevant to the question, is it? But imagine this, if Moslem is to Mosque in the West, ....... then in the Non-West, Muslim is to ..... Musqui? He-heh-heh. Pretty dumb to argue about that, huh?

Moslem is the dutch version of muslim, they colonized Malaysia, so I guess it stuck. Its possible that's its moslem in some other European languages as well.

If you're asking about why they do it on this site and a few other internet sites, it probably has to do with the fact that these people aren't bothering to learn how to spell it correctly. "It sounds like its right, go with it" is what most of them are doing. It is precisely that kind of disrespect that is causing nearly all the world's problems, no one bothering so much to even learn how to spell the names of the groups, much less what they think and why.

Because language is a fluid thing, trying to capture what is "spoken" to make it "written," and we aren't all following a set standard on how to do so. So we just sort of write it "the way it sounds." And we have different voices and different ears, different accents and different pronunciations. So it just comes out different in the long run. That's how all of languages eventually diverge, though they started in the same place.
