I just bought one (my first baby is due Aug. 29th) and it seems to me (from reading the directions) that it doesn't hold much (approx. 30 diapers) and the refills don't last long. I'm thinking that I'll only use it for the poopy diapers instead of putting all the diapers in there in order to save the time and $$. What is your experience with Diaper Genies? Are they really useful?

I registered for one with my babyshower and after it was said and done, my husband's aunt told me they were horrible and to get a Diaper Giant instead. I guess they hold more and are easier to empty/change the refills. At this point, I had already bought mine and set it up. My kids are 12 months and 28 months old now (both still in diapers) and yes...they work well for the smell of really poopy diapers, but they don't hold anywhere NEAR 30 diapers. Maybe when they were newborns, but not now. I can't wait to get rid of it when they're potty trained! It's a bit awkward at first to empty it and change the refill, but once you do it a few hundred times like I have, it's no big deal. :)

If you don't use it and opt to throw the diapers in the trash, newborn diapers (especially those of breastfed babies) really don't smell THAT bad, and you probably won't notice it if it's buried at the bottom of the kitchen trash can. With older children (when they start eating baby food, then later, adult food) you'll NEED something...Diaper Genie, Diaper Giant, a gas mask... LOL

I personally did not like it. First of all, you're right about it only holding 30 diapers, which only lasts for 3 days (probably because it doesn't really hold 30 diapers, more like 20). It also didn't prevent the room from smelling, which is the only reason I bought it. Mine also broke after a few months. I think because I tried to stuff too many diapers in there at once. So be careful about that. My daughter is 10 months old now, and I finally gave up on the thing. I just put her diapers in plastic bags and tie them and put them in the kitchen garbage, and I never notice the smell.

Yes! They are really usefull. I have had 2 actually. 1 for my 5 yr old and 1 now for my 4 month old. It's great because it traps the diapers and stops the odors from smelling up the room. My husband loves it too. The refills last from 3 to 4 weeks for me ans as he gets older they will last longer. It may only hold up to 30 diapers but that's 30 diapers you don't have to smell which gives you a few days of not having to change it. If in doubt try to find one at a yard sale or on ebay so you don't have to pay the full amount.

Honestly I think they are a waste of time and money. I get the concept but just think when you have to empty the thing!! 30 dirty diapers in one bag...man that would stink. Now I know you cant just put it in a household trash can either but here's a couple of ideas. What I do is go to Dollar Tree and in the baby section they sell these scented mini trash bags specifically for diapers. I pick up some of those and most of the time just run them out to my outside trash can. You CAN get away with putting 1 or 2 in a house trash can but I wouldnt recommend any more than that. Hope that helps!

I did not like my diaper genie. It was a waste of money. I ended up using shopping bags and tying them in a knot. My diaper genie also broke not too long after I bought it. It didn't hold many diapers and the refills cost a fortune. My mom had the pail that you get at wal-mart and she liked it. It was only used when my son visited her though so I really don't know exactly how well it would hold in alot of smell.(it did use regular bags though)

I prefer the Diaper Champ. It is the same price as the genie, but takes regular trash bags, so you dont have to spend money on expensive refills and it works just as well...that way you dont have to worry about separating out diapers...that's a pain!

My cousin got one as a baby shower gift and she swears by it...I have asked other moms and they tell me it is not even worth it because those refills cost money. So I am not going to bother with it...I just use plastic grocery bags from shopping and dispose of poopy diapers and throw away in a regular trash can.

I got one for a shower present and once I started using it I started getting small bugs like gnats collecting in the bottom where the diapers where collecting. That grossed me out enough to just throw the darn thing away and just save my grocery bags and use those for the poopy ones.

I had one for my first child and it did not work every well. With my second child I just use the plastic bag from the stores (like the wal-mart bags). I would use one and tie the diaper in it and throw it away. Never have a problem doing it that way. The bag are free and easy to get.

trust me as a mom of five children there are so many useless products that every one will tell you need and the diaper genie is one of them we bought one with our first baby what a pain! besides you don't want to play with dirty diapers any more then you already have to.use a diaper pail or garbage bin
